Crosier General Chapter Bulletin • 28 May 2010
Sint Agatha Klooster (Priory) in the Netherlands
Convocation of 2010 Extraordinary General Chapter
15 February 2010
To all Superiors and Communities of the Order of the Holy Cross,
Confreres,
The great Jubilee year of grace has arrived. We opened the Jubilee year at the conclusion of the General Chapter held at the Holy Cross Priory in Pratista, Cisarua, Indonesia last August. We will celebrate an historic highpoint for the Jubilee year with an extraordinary General Chapter at St. Agatha Priory, in Cuijk Netherlands in September 2010.
The extraordinary General Chapter will take place within the context of the Jubilee celebrations at St. Agatha Priory. I warmly invite all capitulars to participate in these days of Jubilee and celebration at St. Agatha from the 8th through the 14th of September. The Jubilee chapter will provide opportunities for recalling the gracious providence of God to our Order for 800 years.
More particularly, when Master General Rein Vaanhold announced the Decade of Transformation, in a document entitled Celebrating Crosier Foundations, he anticipated celebrating the history of our 800th year of foundation in 2010 and, at the same time, a ten-year prospectus for pursuing the foundational values of our Crosier Charism:
The General Board wishes to use the wonderful momentum generated by the International Studies Days 2000 and channel the leadership energies of the Order, in view of our Order’s 8th Centenary in 2010, to reclaim and solidify the Crosier Religious Charism for building apostolic community.
In ten years time we wish to celebrate the gain among us of strong vital communities, in all our provinces, proprovinces, and regions.
The extraordinary General Chapter of the Jubilee Year will be dedicated to reviewing and celebrating the gain among us, achieved during this decade, through the energies expended to reclaim and solidify our Crosier Religious Life. Given the directives of the 2009 ordinary General Chapter – so clearly aimed at solidifying Crosier community life – the 2010 extraordinary General Chapter will serve to report, reinforce and plan the progress to be made in implementing the decisions taken at the ordinary General Chapter.
Additionally the extraordinary Jubilee chapter will mark the third reading and ultimate approval of the Crosier Constitutions. Our ceremonious Jubilee celebration at St. Agatha Priory serves as an historic occasion to exult and to publish the Crosier Constitutions, starting afresh at the beginning of a new century for our Crosier Charism. Without a doubt, one of the great accomplishments in our Crosier Religious Life renewal this past century has been the Crosier Constitutions, inspired, rethought and rewritten through the Spirit and impetus of the Second Vatican Council.
The actual dates for the extraordinary General Chapter work agenda will be largely concentrated on the 9th, 10th and 13th of September. But undoubtedly the full week of Jubilee activities (8-14 September), culminating in the solemn liturgical celebration of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, needs to be seen as comprising a continuum of celebratory moments within the context of the extraordinary chapter. Some details have already been given out by the General Jubilee Committee and further information will follow from the General Chapter Planning Committee.
In accord with the Constitutions (35.2), having received the consent of the general council, I hereby convoke an extraordinary general chapter for 8-14 September, at St. Agatha Priory, Cuijk, The Netherlands. I direct the provinces and proprovinces to make provision for the delegates to the extraordinary general chapter of 2010, recalling the norm of the General Statutes (35.3):
The body of delegates to the general chapter is as follows. From each province: three delegates for the first fifty professed members or fraction thereof, and one delegate for each additional fifty members or fraction thereof (not counting those who belong to a proprovince). From each proprovince: two delegates for the first fifty professed members or fraction thereof, and one delegate for each additional fifty members or fraction thereof. In calculating the number of members in each province or proprovince, those confreres who are assignati are to be included only in the province or proprovince to which they are assigned. The provincial statutes should provide for possible alternates for delegates and major superiors.
The number of delegates for each province and proprovince is detailed at the conclusion of this letter of convocation.
I note the norm of Constitutions 35.2 for extraordinary general chapters, which makes an exception to the ordinary provisions for suggesting specific agenda at an extraordinary general chapter (noted in GS 5.2). Nevertheless, I would welcome submission of suggestions for topics in conjunction with this Jubilee Chapter. Please submit these to me before Holy Week (29 March 2010), in time for the planning committee’s consideration. The planning committee meets during Easter week.
The Jubilee theme, Starting Afresh from A Place of Light, resonates in this Jubilee chapter as a hope and as a prayer. We pray to start afresh. We hope to draw fresh inspiration from our originating enlightenment and charism: the gift of God to the Crosier Order. May our places of community life become fresh and new places of light by the grace of God.

In Holy Spirit Praying: Keep Yourselves in the Love of God
14 September 2009
A Message from Master General Glen Lewandowski
PDF version and translations into Indonesian, French, Dutch and Portuguese are available at this link: http://www.oscgeneralchapter.info/jubilee/jubilee/jubilee/jubilee_files.html
I love praying. I don’t say I’m good at it. I don’t claim to be a contemplative adept. I don’t pretend to be consistent. I wouldn’t prize my praxis as saintly and exemplary for others. But, I do love praying. In some ways I think I always have. Praying is a major component of my Crosier religious vocation, our commitment to God.
The jubilee celebration organizers have asked that this year’s message for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, before the 2010 celebration, I devote an article to prayer. The offer to do so is intriguing and even stimulating for me. A privilege. I hesitate to put pen to paper, as though I am sure I will be helpful to others. But I do relish the opportunity to share some insights and life impressions I’ve gained, thanks to the way of life we Crosiers have professed, and the time devoted to praying and learning about what that experience in praying means. In putting together these thoughts, however, I prefer to use a more aphoristic style (something I learned from Abbot Primate Bernardo Olivera) rather than a systematic essay.
“They were devoted to praying.” In the description given in Acts (2.42), the description cited by early Canons Regular as constitutive of their own apostolic way of life, the fourth “devotion” named in Acts was devotedness to praying. It wasn’t just a dedication to saying prayers, it was a devotedness to praying. It was not an officium, an obligation, a duty. It was a privileged devotedness. I don’t recall that I’ve ever loved the duty of ‘the office’, but I do love praying.
The chapter entitled Prayer in the Crosier Constitutions. One of the best commentaries I find on this chapter three of the Constitutions is chapter four’s title: “Other Aspects of our Daily Life”. ‘Other’ is clearly ‘other’ than prayer. I learned this by reading the record of the 1967 Chapter of Renewal. Other is next to, secondary to, in addition to daily praying, our praying day by day. Praying is more central and foundational, even more key, than the ‘other’ traditional monastic observances noted in Constitutions chapter four. These two chapters (viz. 3 and 4) were almost separated in the 1967 Chapter, by inserting the content of chapter five (on the Apostolate) between them. But, clearly the original writers insisted that the title “other aspects” had to refer to “other than prayer”, so the original ordered series remained. But even then, chapter three entitled “Prayer” was not chapter one of the Crosier Constitutions. Chapter One had to be on the foremost purpose of our life, community life, just as in Augustine’s Rule the two-fold love of God and neighbor clearly and emphatically precedes the next chapter in the Rule on prayer. Prayer is connected both to the foremost emphasis on community lif

e, as supportive of a life of love, and to other aspects of our daily life, as consequent and contingent to praying.
In holy Spirit praying, keep yourselves in the love of God. This apt biblical quotation from Jude 20 seems to me to match the concern of our Constitutions 16.2: In prayer we open ourselves to the activity of the Holy Spirit – dwelling in our midst, working within and among us – to transform us into the image of Christ, enabling the role relationship of Son, speaking intimately to Abba. Praying is always a Trinitarian dynamic. God’s Spirit, in praying, transforms us from simply ourselves into minding God, having the mind of the beloved Son. Love, as spiritual energy, works us over into the Beloved, addressing Love the Source and Aim of our living. Unus in uno ad unum.
Excessus mentis. Especially during the 12th Century, the Cistercian Century, professional religious men of prayer worked out a stimulating and fruitful interpretation of the phrase from St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians: “If I make sense, it is for you; if I’m out of my mind, it is for God.” (2 Cor 5.13). Praying, in this sense, is an altered state of consciousness: an excess beyond mind, more than it is a diminishment or deficiency of human minding. Minding God expands and intoxicates the mere ho-hum day-to-day way of thinking and reasoning. It is gifted internal activity, stimulated by faith at work within. Praying is so much more than turning our minds and hearts to God. Praying has to do with exceeding our mind’s normalcy and dim-witted capacity. There is gracious room for ecstasy and even occasional dizzying rapture in praying.
Eros and agape. I have always felt that praying is neither a duty nor a bore. Professional prayer, for religious, is passionate and erotic. Pope Benedict notes the positive erotic dimension so essential to Christian living in his first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est. Praying in holy Spirit may have days of flattened affect and even deep melancholy and remorse. But at depth, praying is spirited and infused with the dynamic and gripping Love of God: the right and left hands of a hands-on Father at work within and among us, as Irenaeus insists, when speaking of the mission of the incarnate Son and influencing Spirit of the Father. Part of the delight of praying is its eros. Augustine always insisted that desire (eros) is of the essence of prayer, in fact, is praying. Even if you cannot always be “saying prayers” you can always cultivate desire. This erotic dimension of praying has intimate and essential links to the connection of a life of prayer and a life of religious chastity. Perhaps the modern functional connecting of celibacy and ministry has missed something of the religious eros of a life devoted to praying.
Listening without ceasing to the Word of God. Being devoted to praying entails listening without ceasing to the Word of God, listening for God to speak, to reveal, to touch, to delight, to enlighten, to influence, to taste good. Attending to beauty so ancient, so new, (animadversio - noticing) was what snapped Augustine out of dull aversion to conversion to God. Sharpening his inner equipment, refining his soul, his capax dei, was an integral part of the developed religious experience for our spiritual father. Among the five “inner senses” (expounded by Origen), for Augustine (along with most western theologians) the prized inner sense was that of seeing. For Gregory of Nyssa, however, there were two other paths to developing the “praying equipment” of the soul. In addition to spiritual insight and contemplative gazing (so prized by Platonists), the grasping and grip, the seizure by things divine (prized by the Stoics) worked over Gregory’s understanding of prayer, until he himself developed a more existential mode of religious understanding, using a third sense, that of interpersonal, relational engagement (commercium). God, thus, is less like an object seen or gripped (begrip) and more like a person, a subject, who relates and touches and tantalizes, even seduces and intrigues (Jer. 20.7). Praying is noticing being loved and, however haltingly and too late, to love as response. “You have called to me and have cried out, and have shattered my deafness… You have sent forth fragrance, and I have drawn in my breath, and I pant after you.”
That our prayer deepen and mature. When I was a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child, I prayed like a child. When I was a novice in the Order of the Holy Cross, I took
on praying as a way of life. I thank God for time and study and reflection, for meditative formation, for guided contemplation and occasional experiences of mystic unus spiritus afforded by the Crosier religious way of life. Maturation in prayer is more humbling, gracious and overwhelming than it is prideful posturing over accomplishments in prayer. It is, nevertheless, with a rich appreciation of the charism and way of life we have been given, that we can claim how prayer takes pride of place in our day to day life, enabling prayer to deepen and mature. The old Crosier spiritual classic Vestis Nuptialis distinguishes phases and programmatic stages of growth in spiritual life. We may today be more skeptical about assured grades of progress, but we continue to recognize that personal experience and life history do make a qualitative difference in the life of prayer. Prayer can mature.
We must help them pray. “Teach us to pray, Lord,” was a sincere request addressed to Jesus by his would-be religious adherents. He did. He taught a prayer. But he also taught praying, a relationship, an engagement, a belief, a way of notice and gratitude. John Paul accented that what he would like from religious in today’s church is that they form homes of communion and schools of prayer. Somebody in the Church should do it! Why not religious? Our own Constitutions insist we intend to do just that. Our General Chapter reiterated our religious commitment to make our own prayer a canonical witness to the transcendent in our world and a public school for welcoming others into this communion of the Father with all his sons and daughters, in the holy Spirit of the Beloved Son. It is a privileged and special vocation we Crosiers have fostered through the 800 years we have lived and loved. We believe that by persevering in praying we are apostolically present in our world.
When I come to having to end a moment of faith-sharing, I always recognize the remorse of further things unsaid, accents unmarked, emphases unadorned. But I do love praying. That I did say.
GENERAL CHAPTER COMMUNIQUE--August 16-19, 2009
16 August – SUNDAY—
This bright sunny day found nearly all of the capitulars as guests of the Crosier Parish of Pandu—the only parish that is canonically a Crosier parish in the Diocese of Bandung. So it is that the old monastery there is being rebuilt and expanded into a three story L-shaped building which will house the possible next priory; the mission office which serves the confreres on Nias Island west of Sumatra, the Diocese of Medan in North Sumatra as well as the confreres in the Diocese of Agats of Papua. These domestic missionaries as well as other Crosier confreres in transit will be expected to find a “home away from home” in this community. Much of the bottom floor will be devoted to offices of this parish which this year celebrates its 75th anniversary.
Master General Glen lead the 9:15 AM eucharistic celebration which also served as a thanksgiving for 25 years in priestly service by Cfr. Heri Kartono. Heri delivered the homily filled with much humor. Parish pastor, Cfr. Sudarno, “roasted” his ordination classmate in a post-communion address, witnessing to cheerful brotherhood.
The parish council hosted the capitulars thereafter at a festive “double-menu” mid-day meal. They served Chinese fare along with Italian dishes of “potatoe-lazonya” and spaghetti. Thereafter, some capitulars continued to tour the city of Bandung filled with the national colors of red and white and other supplementary multi-colored banners and flags. Other capitulars returned to Pratista for a well-needed siesta.
17 August – MONDAY – INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION.
The festive atmosphere of Indonesia’s 64th birthday was felt through the loud Indonesian gamelan music piped over large speakers in the park-like terraced ravine in the midst of the Pratista complex. All the 20-some families of workers at the monastery and retreat center sponsored a full day of games and fun-activities for adults and children. In the meantime, the capitulars resumed the General Chapter. They suggested various polishing touches and corrections to the relict so that the committee consisting of Cfr. Huub Wagemans, Charles Loyak, Bob Rossi, and Tedjoworo, could finish their task well. They were acclaimed to be the best writing committee yet, according to Cfr. Jim Hentges. During these morning sessions, the plans were announced by Master General Glen for an “Extra-ordinary General Chapter” to be held around the September 800th jubilee celebrations at St. Agatha in Cuijk, Holland.
The entire day saw all the lawn and facilities staff busy decorating the pathways with paper lamps, and the ILSKI courtyard with special lighting and banners, preparations for opening the 800th jubilee celebration the next day.
18 August – TUESDAY – THE FEAST OF ST. HELENA.
The nearly-final version of the Relict was reviewed one last time and given unanimous approval as representing and presenting the essential results of the 2009 General Chapter of the Order of the Holy Cross. Further acclamation to the Chapter was celebrated mid-day in the Chapel of St. Helena as the capitulars all signed their names to the formal Chapter documents. Then the capitulars along with the secretarial and liturgical staff of the chapter began to celebrate the end of a good General Chapter with a pre-lunch “happy hour”, complete with home-made limoncello by Cfr. Jim Hentges.
The afternoon found the capitulars beginning to do some packing, while other committees finished their various tasks, so as to begin the festive opening of the eucharist opening the 800th jubilee in the Province of Sang Kristus. At 5:30 PM, drumming brought a group of young boys charging out of the chapel doors into the canopied area where nearly one-quarter of the world’s Crosiers gathered with religious and lay guests. These young boys danced Papua style, followed by a larger group of small and teenage girls doing other typical Indonesian dances, finally leading the entire gathering into the chapel, too small to hold the 200 plus celebrators. The 20 plus Crosier fraters from the Sultan Agung Scholasticate created an exquisite choir, leading all in liturgical song.
Master General Glen delivered a two-part homily, the first part in English and a second highly affirming message in Indonesian, honoring the many blessings of the Indonesian Crosier community as well as their many lay “partners in ministry”. After the communion, Bishop Yohanes Pujasumarta gave a tremendous address amalgamating his motto “Duc in Altum” (go to the deep) with the Master General’s “Etiam Profunda Dei” (Even the deepest of God”). Bishop Yohanes saw the chapter as well as the role of the Crosiers as that of inviting themselves and others into the deepest aspects of God.
Thereafter, Master General Glen gave four candles to the four representatives of the continents of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe. These candles were lit from the “Candle of the Holy Spirit” burning since the beginning of the chapter. This light-multiplied was carried to the ILSKI courtyard of jubilation, processing past a multitude of paper lamps lined up along the path. There these four candles would light four much huger candles representing the multi-cultural presence and ministry of the Crosiers. A special golden cross was in-fixed upon a larger metal cross on the outside walls of the ILSKI building. A cadenced Asmat-style “Wah-wah-wah” accompanied the process of the Master General implanting the smaller cross into the larger one. A sung acclamation from the Island of Nias closed that ceremony.
The atmosphere of deepest hospitality was utterly palpable as nearly 100 Crosiers stood singing a special song of the cross while encircling all their guests who stood near their dinner tables in the middle of the courtyard. Warm hospitality continued to be poured forth as the Crosiers mixed with their guests at the 30 dinner tables, while other fathers and fraters served this sit-down meal. Simultaneously, groups of Crosier capitulars from the various provinces and proprovinces provided sung-entertainment, including the Generalate with the song, “All are Welcome in this Place”. This message underscored their warm invitation to all Crosiers and their supporters to the Generalate community in Rome. Thus ended the 2009 Chapter and thus began the 800 year jubilee of the Crosiers in this world.
19 August – WEDNESDAY
Beginning at dusk, some capitulars began leaving. At 11:00 AM a bus-load of them headed for the Jakarta International Airport. The atmosphere at Pratista gradually quieted down as Priory community members and their lay workers continued to clean up and put back in place the many materials used during the Chapter and Jubilee celebration.

Comunicado do Capítulo Geral 2009 - 17/08/09
Assim terminamos o penúltimo dia do capítulo geral. Pratista – 17/08/09 Cfr.
Pratista - 16/08/09 Cfr. Wilson |

NIEUWS VAN HET GENERAAL KAPITTEL - Maandag 17 augustus 2009

NIEUWS VAN HET GENERAAL KAPITTEL, Vrijdag 14 augustus 2009

Zalige hoogdag, morgen.

NIEUWS VAN HET GENERAAL KAPITTEL: Donderdag 13 augustus 2009

NIEUWS VAN HET GENERAAL KAPITTEL: Woensdag 12 augustus 2009

Terminamos assim o processo eleitoral do Capítulo. Cfr. Wilson – o.s.c. |
